Things to Do in Downtown Cabo San Lucas — A Guide from 605 Tower

Most Cabo travel guides assume you're stuck in a resort 30 minutes from anything real. This one doesn't.

605 Tower sits on Boulevard Lázaro Cárdenas — the same downtown corridor that Cabo San Lucas is actively rebuilding into a pedestrian-first zone under the "Camina Cabo" initiative launched in 2025. The Marina is a 7-9 minute walk. The main nightlife strip with Squid Roe and Mandala is 6-8 minutes away. Plaza Amelia Wilkes, the cultural heart of old Cabo, is 10-12 minutes from your front door.

This guide is written from where we sit. Each section below is one of the six things you'll actually want to do while staying in downtown Cabo, with honest walking times, what to expect, when to go, and how to do it without paying resort markup.

If you only have a few days, focus on El Arco (the boat trip to Land's End), one evening on the Lázaro Cárdenas strip, and one trip to Médano Beach. Everything else is bonus. Start with the section that fits your trip below.

1. El Arco at Land's End — The Most Photographed Spot in Cabo

The granite arch where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez is unmistakable. It's the geographical end of North America, three stories tall, and the single most photographed landmark in Baja California Sur.

You can't drive there. You can't hike there. The only way to see El Arco is by boat — and every boat departs from the Cabo San Lucas Marina, which is a 7-9 minute walk from 605 Tower. Glass-bottom boats run 45-60 minute loops; sunset catamaran cruises take about 2 hours and include the sea lion colony, Pelican Rock, and Lover's Beach.

Best time: early morning for calm water and photos, or sunset for the golden hour shot most travelers come for.

2. Sport Fishing — Why Cabo Is Called the Marlin Capital of the World

The Cabo San Lucas Marina has hosted some of the largest sport fishing tournaments on the planet for over 40 years. The waters where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez are unusually rich — striped marlin, blue marlin, yellowfin tuna, dorado, and roosterfish are all caught year-round, though seasons vary by species.

Charter operators dock right at the Marina. From 605 Tower it's a 7-9 minute walk to the docks — most charters launch at sunrise, which means walking down before 6 AM with coffee in hand.

You don't need to be experienced. Half-day trips work for first-timers; full-day charters are for serious anglers chasing trophy fish. October through December is peak marlin season.

3. Whale Watching — December to April

Each winter, 18,000+ humpback whales migrate from Alaska to Baja California's warm waters to breed and raise calves. Gray whales follow the same migration. Boat tours from the Cabo Marina put you close enough to see breaches, tail slaps, and mothers swimming with their newborns.

Season runs roughly December 15 through April 15, with mid-January through February as the peak. After that, the whales head north and tours shift to other activities.

If you're traveling between December and April, this is the experience to prioritize. Tours leave from the same Marina docks as El Arco boats — a 7-9 minute walk from 605 Tower.

4. Sunset Cruises — The Most Popular Way to See El Arco in 2026

Sunset catamarans have quietly taken over as the most-booked Cabo experience this year, surpassing midday boat tours. The reason: cooler temperatures, golden-hour lighting on the arch, open bar, music, and a 2-hour escape from the heat of the day.

Most cruises depart around 5:00 PM from the Marina, loop past Lover's Beach, anchor near El Arco for photos as the sun sets, and return after dark. Larger catamarans seat 40-60 people; smaller charters are more intimate.

This is the best "do once" activity for couples and groups. If you're celebrating something — anniversary, birthday, family reunion — book this.

5. Nightlife — Squid Roe, Mandala, and the Lázaro Cárdenas Strip

Cabo's downtown nightlife corridor runs along Boulevard Lázaro Cárdenas, the same boulevard where 605 Tower is located. Squid Roe (open since 1989) and Mandala (since 2009) are the two anchors, both 6-8 minutes walking from your suite.

Squid Roe is three floors of organized chaos: DJs, dancing on tables, waiters with tequila spray bottles. It's been hosting Spring Break and celebrity parties for over 30 years. Mandala next door is more upscale clubbing — EDM, top-tier DJs, dress code, VIP service.

Between them you'll find smaller bars, Cabo Wabo (Sammy Hagar's original rock bar), and the new wave of cocktail spots opening as part of the 2026 downtown revitalization.

The advantage of staying at 605 Tower: walking distance home. No surge pricing, no waiting for a taxi at 2 AM.

6. Plaza Amelia Wilkes — The Cultural Heart of Old Cabo

Most tourists never make it here. Plaza Amelia Wilkes is the historic square at the inland edge of downtown — about a 10-12 minute walk from 605 Tower. It's named after Amelia Wilkes Ceseña, an early educator of Cabo's children, and is the traditional center of the original fishing village that existed before the resorts.

The Natural History Museum sits on the plaza, marked by a full whale skeleton at the entrance. The 18th-century Iglesia de San Lucas faces the gardens. During high season (October-May), the plaza hosts "Viva La Plaza" — a weekly cultural evening with artisans, food, and live music.

If you've already done the boat tours and the nightlife, this is the reset stop. Quiet, shaded, and the most photographed traditional plaza in Cabo.

How to Use This Guide

The six sections above link to in-depth pages with walking directions, seasonal information, frequently asked questions, and tips from 605 Tower's concierge.

If you have just one day, do El Arco in the morning and the Lázaro Cárdenas strip at night.

If you have three days, add a sunset cruise on day two and Plaza Amelia Wilkes plus dinner downtown on day three.

If you're here in whale season (Dec-April), prioritize a whale watching tour over a daytime El Arco visit — you'll see both whales and the arch on the same trip.
